It doesn't have anything to do with the lottery. You didn't understand why the word sounded like "troff" and so I gave you the definition of the word that most people have heard. It also means the lowest point. Spike would mean the highest point. Trough is pronounced the same way that cough is. "ough" has several sounds in our language.
Long o - as in though
oo - as in through
ow - as in bough
off - as in trough
uff - as in tough
That's just one thing we have to put up with in the English language, like it or not. So many ways to pronounce the same letters.
Again, this wasn't a criticism. Please understand. I just wanted to know what the word was supposed to be.
